El Bierzo is a “coupage” of the roads, landscapes, and cultures that traverse Northwest Spain. Gateway to Galicia and the most western part of Asturias, it is a unique region due to its climate and orographic conditions, ideal for agriculture and all kinds of outdoor activities.
In addition, in El Bierzo there are unique treasures like a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site. Las Médulas, a unique Roman gold mine, which when abandoned and subjected to erosion resulted in a beautiful canvas of vegetation and clay with unique contrasts and memorable sunsets. Another of the attractions of this beautiful region is the Camino de Santiago, which passes right by our winery and vineyards. The so-called Main Street of Europe is a road that has been travelled for over a thousand years by pilgrims from all over the world, which crosses El Bierzo from east to west and offers visitors a sensory combination of colour-tasting that varies with each season.
Getting to know this rich land and all its heritage, be it cultural, natural, or related to its landscape, helps us to understand the incredible conditions for the production of these very special wines.

These places are key to understanding El Bierzo and our history.
The fruit of meticulous work and careful attention is a wine that tells pleasant stories about a close bond, in harmony and with deep respect, between man and land. A beautiful land, El Bierzo, with exceptional qualities for wine craftsmanship.
From its humid slate soils, Godelia works to make the best version of its grape varieties sprout: Godello and Mencía. Two words that are essence and origin, identity and personality… the soul of the Winery.
Bodegas Godelia was founded to produce wines from EL Bierzo with the utmost honesty and expressiveness. In accordance with tradition, but with constant innovation as a maxim. We try to extract the greatest potential from the grapes we grow, their greatest expression. In addition to the wines which have traditionally been made in El Bierzo, we seek new opportunities for our grapes to express themselves in new and unique ways. The result is wines that tell stories about El Bierzo, its customs, its people, and its gastronomy.
The wines of El Bierzo are part of the land, of history, and of the future. The land is present in them through the nuances transmitted to them by the clay, pebble, and slate soils. The land is also present through the effort and care the vineyards have been worked with for generations, as a legacy or inheritance that is a family treasure.
El Bierzo’s wines are unique wines with personality, different, with high culinary potential. A wine tells the story of where it comes from and how it has been made, but it also tells us what the gastronomy of the region it comes from is. That is why we explore all the possibilities and make different wines to suit different situations, dishes, and moments. The key is to enjoy the moment and the company.
We make our wines as a way to enjoy El Bierzo, to feed the soul. A way to tell stories and share moments and feelings.
The Mencía grape is a unique variety that allows us to produce fresh and fruity wines as well as very complex and mineral wines. It is in the vineyard that Mencía forms its character. Age, soil, orientation, and work in the vineyard is the first step. This way we have the opportunity to produce wines with very different profiles, from Viernes to Libamus, including Godelia Mencía and Godelia Selección Mencía. Different versions of a single variety. All of them different, varietal, unique.
The Godello grape has always been the winery’s choice: its potential for making wines other than the traditional types is a value that we learned from the beginning as well as the possibilities that it offers for new productions. The Godello grape also depends on the vineyard in which it is grown, which is why the range of opportunities is extended with each different plot. For that reason we can produce such different and special wines. From Godelia Cuvée, like our Godelia Godello with Doña Blanca, to Godelia Selección Godello.
The wine is the result of our work, of our effort. It is the materialisation of a dream after each harvest. The final toast after the work we have done.

We understand winemaking as an art. In this way, we manage to amplify and refine the incredible natural qualities of each variety of grape that grows in our vineyards. The difficulty is not just to extract all the natural wealth of this land and put it into a bottle. For the work to be finished, the bottle must also have room to display the beautiful landscape of El Bierzo, the noble character of its people, and its centuries of history.
We believe that wine is made in the vineyard, so we are respectful of the extraordinary raw material we work with, intervening as little as possible to allow our varieties to express themselves naturally and honestly, telling us who they are, where they come from, and how they are.
The preparation of the wine is the last step in a process full of hard work and excitement. With it, we are able to leave our mark and our personality on the wines we make. We are aware of the value of the varieties and the vineyards we make our wines from so we are very strict about respecting the landscape, the terroir, and the grape variety, being honest with the origin of the grapes the wine has been made from. Our goal is to drink a little bit of El Bierzo in every sip.
The key to success in this complex process is the fruitful coexistence of traditional craftsmanship and the innovative contribution of fresh ideas from our constant research. Our final aim is to achieve excellence in the production of our wines.
The fruit of labour in a glass.
Latest vintages prepared.
The honour of having outstanding raw material also brings with it great responsibility. We believe that makes it worth stopping for a second to observe, listen, and feel. Our goal is to understand the magnitude of the natural wealth we are going to work with. The imperfect harmony of the stage before us is accompanied by a silence charged with a message.
Only the wind breaks through this silence, and it does so to offer us aromas faithful to the truth of the landscape. It is time to sink your hands into the fertile soil, which responds with a cool caress. Moisture is a constant. What we feel is a living land with much to offer. The rough textures of the vine are in start contrast to the soft skin of the treasure that it is capable of producing.
Every grape has a personality.

Godello is one of the most highly valued white varieties, due to its quality and scarcity, since it is only found in El Bierzo and a part of Galicia. The personality of the wines made from this white grape variety transmits the terroir of the area through floral, mineral, and ripe fruit aromas, such as apple and quince.
It is favoured by low fermentation temperatures and ageing on its fine lees, which makes Godello a unique, elegant, complex, and fresh wine.

El Bierzo and a part of Galicia are the only areas in the world where Mencía is present, a red variety with a short cycle and interesting organoleptic qualities that allow for the production of both young and crianza wines or wines aged in oak.
It is an aromatic variety in which red fruit, plum, and red currant aromas stand out, together with the character of its slatey terroir, which gives the wine minerality and complexity.

Doña Blanca is a medium-cycle white variety, native to El Bierzo region and not grown widely in Spain.
Its magic can be found in the perfect blend it makes with Godello, providing citrus, fennel, and lemon balm aromas, which improve with cold maceration and ageing on fine lees. These qualities make Doña Blanca a fascinating variety.

There is a total of more than 40 hectares of vineyards distributed among several estates at different altitudes and orientations.
E-W ORIENTATION30ha.

The Legúas estate sits on 30 ha on a single plot, which is rare in El Bierzo region. It has native varieties, Godello and Mencia, in trellises.
The plot has an east-west orientation and has its own special microclimate. In this way, we can understand the needs of each sub-plot and obtain low yields but with higher quality grapes.

SOIL: Slate, pebbles and quartzes, clay.
GRAPE: Godello and Mencía.
E-W ORIENTATION5ha.

This is a very special estate: it could be taken as the first point of development and the beginning of El Bierzo. The estate, close to the ancient Celtic settlement that gives it its name, has five hectares of old Godello and Mencía vineyards, which we can obtain their maximum expression from thanks to their altitude and steep slope.

VARIOUS PLOTS10ha.

One of the most important legacies of El Bierzo is its century-old vineyards on slopes with different grades, soils, and orientations, which is a reflection of the area’s complexity and uniqueness.

Soils
The soils of our estates have the ideal capacity to extract the maximum potential from each grape variety and to produce unique wines that respect the area’s typical characteristics.

Slate soils provide minerality and acidity, protect the roots and keep humidity levels stable, which allows for very aromatic and high quality wines.

This type of soil is the one that best reflects the area’s personality as well as helping drainage and deep root expansion.

They store water and organic matter needed by the plant. We usually see it combined with sand in different proportions depending on the depth of the soil.
El Bierzo is the key point in El Camino of our winery.
Bodegas Godelia is located in El Bierzo, a unique landscape and exceptional environment for winemaking. Located in the northwest of Spain, El Bierzo is a region surrounded by mountains that forms a large valley cut through by the Sil River, with a wide array of soils and orientations in its vineyards. The richness of the soil, combined with the age of the vineyard, makes it a unique place to produce high quality wines.
Right on the Camino de Santiago, the winery is located on your route through El Bierzo. Literally. The French Way of Saint James goes past our front door. It is the exact point where the countdown to the last 200 km begins and the pilgrim’s final stage before arriving in Galicia. At the winery we are delighted to accompany you on this journey. This is not by chance, since El Camino brought with it a legacy to which the winery wants to pay tribute. This special location in El Bierzo has given the winery the self-satisfaction of carefully growing the native grape varieties: Mencía, Godello, and Doña Blanca. Our aim is always to transmit terroir, sensitivity, and elegance in our wines.
Godelia’s great virtue lies in the fact that it was born as a passion at the end of 2009. It is a love for nature that led the García Rodríguez family, the founders of the winery, to give an outlet to their enthusiasm for viticulture in El Bierzo. It is a dream come true, a winery in El Bierzo that creates value and a future for the region, a legacy through its wines. It’s about not being satisfied until you create a masterpiece, with a healthy amount of excitement, dedication, and effort. All this, to achieve excellence.
We are terroir, sensitivity, and elegance.
Talent, creativity, and a load of dedication.
A young, diverse, and highly qualified team that continues to pursue our goal of perfection. We’re not family, although we feel like one. Nor is it the world of wineries that has chosen us as responsible for perpetuating its existence. We are the ones who have chosen to dedicate our time to a great mission: to create a top quality wine whose very DNA reveals the passion with which it has been made.

The heart of the project and the one who defines our strategy. His passion for viticulture is the inspiration that drives this team.
